Argot was the term originally used to describe the jargon of the criminal underworld, characterized by colourful images and distinctive intonation and designed to confuse the outsider. Some French authors write in argot and so have helped it spread and grow. More generally, the special vocabulary used by any social or professional group is also known as argot.
