The bande dessinée or "BD" enjoys a huge following amongst adults as well as children in France, where the comic strip is accorded both literary and artistic status. Every year, an international exhibition takes place in Angoulême at the end of January. Astérix, Tintin, Lucky Luke and Gaston Lagaffe are some of the most famous cartoon characters.
