    0.01 sec.
mai [mɛ] nmMay voir aussi juillet
le premier maiLe premier mai is a public holiday in France and commemorates the trades union demonstrations in the United States in 1886 when workers demanded the right to an eight-hour working day. Sprigs of lily of the valley are traditionally exchanged. Le 8 mai is also a public holiday and commemorates the surrender of the German army to Eisenhower on 7 May, 1945. It is marked by parades of ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen in most towns. The social upheavals of May and June 1968, with their student demonstrations, workers' strikes and general rioting, are usually referred to as "les événements de mai 68". De Gaulle's Government survived, but reforms in education and a move towards decentralization ensued.
