1.  Indique une grande quantité, un grand nombre, l'intensité: Il a tant de qualités. Elle souffre tant ! (tellement).

2.  Dans une phrase négative ou interrogative, marque l'égalité: Il n'a pas eu tant de chance. Elle ne travaille pas tant que moi (autant).

3.  Indique une quantité indéterminée, dans une mesure, une distribution: Supposons que tu dépenses tant par mois... En réponse à votre lettre du tant (= quantième du mois). En tant que, en qualité de, comme: Je te conseille ceci non pas en tant que médecin, mais en tant qu'ami. Faire tant et si bien que, agir avec une telle persévérance que: Elle a fait tant et si bien qu'il a fini par accepter. Si tant est que (+ subj.), à supposer que: Si tant est qu'il s'en souvienne. Tant bien que mal, péniblement: Elle a fini tant bien que mal. Tant de, un si grand nombre, une si grande quantité de: Tant de malheurs ont frappé cette famille ! Tant et plus, beaucoup; énormément: Des histoires de ce genre, j'en ai entendu tant et plus. Tant mieux, c'est très bien ainsi. Tant pis, c'est dommage. Tant s'en faut, loin de là; bien au contraire: " Est-elle aimable ? – Non, tant s'en faut ". Tant soit peu ou un tant soit peu, si peu que ce soit: Si tu écoutes tant soit peu, tu comprendras.

Indique une coïncidence dans la durée: Tant que je vivrai, je me souviendrai de ça (= aussi longtemps que je vivrai). Allons-y tant qu'il n'y a pas trop de monde (= pendant que). Tant qu'à (+ inf.), annonce ce qui est, ou ce qui serait, préférable: Tant qu'à relire ces chapitres, autant tout relire. FAM. Tant qu'à faire, au point où l'on en est; puisqu'il faut le faire: Tant qu'à faire, on pourrait aussi repeindre le salon.

Remarque Tant, adverbe de quantité, s'emploie avec un verbe, jamais avec un adjectif ou un adverbe: je l'aime tant; nous avons tant marché. En revanche, il peut être employé devant une forme verbale: un mari tant chéri. Devant un adjectif, on emploie si: il était si pâle qu'il nous a effrayés.
Suivi de la préposition de et d'un complément, tant joue le rôle d'un collectif et l'accord des mots variables placés après se fait généralement avec le complément: tant de soldats y ont laissé la vie, tant de crimes restés impunis. Mais si le groupe tant de + nom est considéré globalement, l'emploi du singulier est possible: tant de larmes est bouleversant.
Ne pas confondre avec le tan, un taon ou le temps.
